        Menopause: signs to look out for

        4 min read

        Menopause is a natural stage of a woman’s life, but the transition towards it, perimenopause, can start several years earlier, often from the age of 40. During this time, hormonal changes can show up in very different ways from one woman to another.

        Most common signs

        • Irregular periods, shorter, longer or with a different flow
        • Hot flushes, sometimes with night sweats
        • Trouble falling asleep or unrefreshing sleep
        • Mood changes, irritability or anxiety
        • Tiredness and difficulty concentrating
        • Vaginal dryness and changes in intimacy
        • Changes in weight and body fat distribution

        When to seek advice

        It is worth booking an appointment whenever symptoms affect your well-being, sleep or daily life, or if you are unsure about what is happening. Any bleeding after menopause should always be assessed by a doctor.

        This is also a good time to focus on prevention: heart and bone health, nutrition and physical activity.

        How we can help

        At GOLDMED, the Perimenopause, Menopause and Hormonal Changes consultation provides an individual assessment of your symptoms and personalised follow-up for each woman.

        Last updated: 21 September 2026

        The website of Morgado e Valentim – Clínica de Medicina e Nutrição do Algarve, Lda., hereinafter GOLDMED, uses cookies and similar technologies to ensure the website works properly, improve the user experience and, when authorised by the user, obtain statistical information about how the website is used.

        This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, what they are used for and how you can manage your preferences.

        Cookies are used in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Portuguese Law No. 41/2004 of 18 August, as amended, on privacy in electronic communications. The Portuguese data protection authority (CNPD) considers that website operators must provide clear information about the cookies used and obtain consent where legally required.

        1. What are cookies?

        Cookies are small text files stored on the device used to access a website, such as a computer, tablet or smartphone.

        Among other things, these files make it possible to recognise the device during a visit, save certain preferences and collect information about how the website is used.

        Cookies may be set by the website itself (first-party cookies) or by external services used by the website (third-party cookies).

        2. What types of cookies do we use?

        The GOLDMED website may use different categories of cookies.

        Strictly necessary cookies

        These cookies are essential for the website to work properly and make it possible to provide basic features, ensure security and display pages correctly.

        Because they are necessary for the website to work, these cookies do not require consent where they fall within the exceptions provided for in applicable law.

        Preference cookies

        These may be used to save certain choices made by the user, such as browsing preferences or certain website settings.

        Where they are not strictly necessary for the service to work, they will be used in accordance with the rules applicable to consent.

        Analytics and statistics cookies

        These cookies help us understand how visitors use the website, for example which pages are most visited, how long visitors stay on the website and how they arrived there.

        This information helps GOLDMED understand how the website is used and continuously improve its structure and content.

        These cookies will only be used when the user has given the necessary consent.

        3. Google Analytics

        Google Analytics will be configured to respect the privacy choices made by the user and applicable legal requirements.

        Google provides its own mechanisms to manage the use of data and implement users’ consent preferences.

        GOLDMED will not use analytics cookies for this purpose before obtaining consent where legally required.

        4. Consent to the use of cookies

        Where a cookie is not strictly necessary to provide the website or a feature expressly requested by the user, storing it or accessing the device will depend on consent, under applicable law.

        Consent must result from a positive action by the user, given freely, specifically, in an informed manner and unambiguously.

        Simply continuing to browse the website will not, in itself, be considered consent to the use of cookies that require consent.

        5. Managing cookie preferences

        On your first visit to the website, a cookie notice may be shown allowing the user to accept, reject or configure the cookies that depend on their consent.

        Users may later change or withdraw their consent through the options available on the website, namely in Cookie settings.

        Withdrawing consent must be as easy as giving it, as required by the GDPR.

        Users can also set their browser to block or delete cookies. However, disabling certain strictly necessary cookies may affect how some website features work.

        6. Third-party cookies

        Some features or services provided through the website may involve third parties that use cookies or similar technologies.

        In such cases, the processing of information carried out by those third parties will also be subject to their respective privacy policies and terms of use.

        GOLDMED seeks to ensure that the use of third-party services through the website complies with applicable data protection and privacy law.

        7. Cookie duration

        Cookies may be:

        • Session cookies: these are temporary and are deleted when the user closes the browser.
        • Persistent cookies: these remain on the device for a set period or until deleted by the user.

        The retention period depends on the specific purpose of each cookie and will be indicated, where applicable, in the cookie management panel available on the website.

        8. Managing cookies through your browser

        Most browsers allow users to view, block or delete cookies through their settings.

        How to manage these options varies depending on the browser used. You can check your browser’s privacy and security settings for more information.

        Deleting or blocking certain cookies may affect how some website features work.

        9. Personal data protection

        Some cookies and electronic identifiers may allow certain information to be linked to a user or device and, in certain circumstances, may constitute personal data.

        Where this happens, the processing will be carried out in accordance with the GDPR, Portuguese Law No. 58/2019 of 8 August, Law No. 41/2004 of 18 August and other applicable legislation.

        For more detailed information on how GOLDMED collects and processes personal data, please see our Privacy Policy.

        Appointment Booking and Cancellation Policy

        Last updated: 21 September 2026

        This Appointment Booking and Cancellation Policy sets out the conditions applicable to booking, confirming, cancelling and rescheduling appointments at GOLDMED (Morgado e Valentim – Clínica de Medicina e Nutrição do Algarve, Lda).

        The aim of this policy is to ensure proper management of the clinic’s schedule, promote respect for the time of patients and healthcare professionals and provide clear and transparent information about the conditions associated with booking appointments.

        1. Booking appointments

        Appointments can be booked:

        • by phone;
        • in person, at the clinic;
        • through the website www.goldmed.pt;
        • by WhatsApp;
        • by email, at geral@goldmed.pt.

        When booking, we may ask for the personal data needed to manage the appointment and communicate with the patient, namely name, phone number and email address. Other data may be requested when needed for the proper provision or management of healthcare.

        Bookings are subject to the availability of the requested time slot and of the professional or specialty.

        In certain situations, full or partial payment of the appointment in advance may be requested. Where applicable, the patient will be informed beforehand of the amount to be paid and the applicable cancellation and refund conditions.

        The price list and financial conditions applicable to healthcare are available for consultation, under applicable law. The Portuguese Health Regulatory Authority (ERS) requires providers to give financial information in advance, in a complete, objective and accessible manner.

        2. Appointment confirmation

        Whenever possible, GOLDMED will confirm the appointment, namely by phone, SMS, WhatsApp or email.

        Sending a reminder is a courtesy of the clinic and does not replace the patient’s responsibility to ensure they are available for the appointment previously booked.

        3. Cancellation and rescheduling by the patient

        Patients who need to cancel or change an appointment should give at least 48 hours’ notice before the scheduled time.

        Cancellations or rescheduling requests can be made through the same channels used for booking.

        Whenever a cancellation is made within the minimum 48-hour notice period, GOLDMED will, whenever possible, reschedule the appointment or refund any amounts paid in advance, in accordance with the conditions communicated at the time of booking.

        4. Cancellation with less than 48 hours’ notice and missed appointments

        When an appointment is cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice or the patient does not attend without prior notice, the cancellation condition communicated at the time of booking may apply.

        Where an advance payment has been made and the patient was informed beforehand that it is non-refundable in the event of late cancellation or non-attendance, the amount paid may not be refunded.

        This condition is intended to compensate for the unavailability of the reserved slot and to allow proper management of the clinic’s schedule.

        GOLDMED will only apply a fee or charge for late cancellation or non-attendance when the patient has been informed of the conditions beforehand. This possibility is recognised by the Portuguese Health Regulatory Authority for private healthcare providers.

        5. Exceptional situations

        GOLDMED will reasonably consider duly justified exceptional situations that prevent the patient from attending or cancelling within the set period.

        Acceptance of an exceptional situation is at the clinic’s discretion, taking into account the specific circumstances.

        6. Late arrivals

        Patients are advised to arrive at the clinic about 10 minutes before their appointment time.

        In the event of late arrival, the appointment will go ahead as far as possible, taking into account the professional’s availability and the impact on other appointments.

        A significant delay may make it impossible to hold the appointment at the originally scheduled time or require it to be rescheduled.

        When an appointment has to be rescheduled because the patient is late, the conditions for cancellations or missed appointments may apply, provided they were communicated beforehand.

        7. Cancellation or change by GOLDMED

        For exceptional or unforeseen reasons or force majeure, GOLDMED may cancel or change a previously booked appointment.

        In such situations, the clinic will try to notify the patient as early as possible and offer a new date and time.

        When an appointment is cancelled by GOLDMED and an advance payment has been made, the patient is entitled to a refund of the amount paid or, with their agreement, may use that amount for a new booking.

        8. Refunds

        Refunds will be made in accordance with the conditions communicated at the time of booking and with applicable law.

        Unless otherwise stated, an advance payment will be refunded when:

        • the cancellation is made at least 48 hours in advance;
        • the appointment is cancelled by GOLDMED;
        • there is another situation in which a refund is legally due.

        In cases of late cancellation or non-attendance, there may be no right to a refund when this condition was communicated and accepted at the time of booking.

        9. Situations involving insurance, health subsystems or agreements

        When an appointment takes place under an insurance policy, health subsystem or agreement, specific conditions may apply to booking, cancellation, missed appointments and payments.

        The patient will be informed of the applicable conditions whenever they are relevant to accessing healthcare.

        GOLDMED provides information on prices, access conditions and, where applicable, relevant agreements, in accordance with the legal obligations applicable to healthcare providers.

        10. Personal data protection

        Personal data provided for booking and managing appointments will be processed in accordance with the Privacy Policy of GOLDMED and applicable data protection law.

        GOLDMED collects only the data necessary for the purposes for which it is processed, respecting the principles applicable to personal data protection.

        11. General provisions

        This policy aims to set out clear and transparent rules for managing bookings, balancing the availability of healthcare professionals with patients’ needs.

        Conditions relating to any advance payments, cancellation fees or missed appointments will be communicated before or at the time of booking, allowing the patient to make an informed decision.

        By making a booking, the patient declares that they have been informed of the conditions applicable to the appointment, including, where applicable, the conditions relating to cancellation, rescheduling and refunds.

        This policy is without prejudice to any rights granted to the patient by applicable law.

        GOLDMED will not use personal data for purposes incompatible with those for which it was collected without first ensuring an appropriate legal basis and, where required, providing the necessary information or obtaining the data subject’s consent.

        4. Legal bases for processing

        Personal data will be processed on the legal basis appropriate to each situation, which may include:

        • the performance of a contract or the taking of pre-contractual steps;
        • compliance with legal obligations;
        • the legitimate interests of GOLDMED, provided that the rights and freedoms of the data subject do not prevail;
        • the data subject’s consent, where required;
        • the provision of healthcare and management of the related services, as provided for in the GDPR and applicable national legislation.

        Consent is not the legal basis for all processing. Whenever there is another appropriate legal basis, processing may take place without the need for consent.

        In the case of health data, GOLDMED will only process it when there is a lawful condition provided for in Article 9 of the GDPR and applicable law. Portuguese Law No. 58/2019 sets out, in particular, specific requirements for confidentiality, access and security in the processing of health data.

        5. Health data and confidentiality

        The nature of GOLDMED’s activity involves, in certain situations, the processing of health information.

        This data is processed only to the extent necessary for purposes related to the provision and management of healthcare, compliance with legal obligations and other legitimately applicable purposes.

        Data used to respond to contact requests will be kept for as long as necessary to manage them and, where applicable, for the periods required to comply with legal obligations or defend rights.

        When data is no longer needed and there is no legal obligation or other legitimate basis for keeping it, it will be appropriately deleted or anonymised.

        9. Data subject rights

        Under applicable law, data subjects may, depending on the circumstances and applicable legal requirements, exercise the following rights:

        • Right of access to their personal data;

        • Right to data portability, in the cases provided for in the GDPR;
        • Right to withdraw consent, where processing is based on consent.

        These rights are not absolute and there may be situations in which their exercise is limited by legal obligations, the need to retain data or other grounds provided for in law.

        The Portuguese data protection authority (CNPD) confirms that data subjects may exercise their rights free of charge with the controller and that, as a rule, a response must be given within one month, which may be extended in the situations provided for in the GDPR.

        How long does an appointment last?
        +

        The length of the appointment varies depending on the specialty and the type of assessment. A typical appointment lasts 30-60 minutes, allowing enough time for a thorough and personal assessment.

        What happens at the first appointment?

        At the first appointment we carry out a detailed assessment of your medical history. We recommend arriving 10 minutes early to fill in forms. Bring relevant documents (ID, SNS card/insurance, previous test results, list of medication).

        What documents do I need to bring?
        +

        We recommend bringing: an identity document (ID card or passport), SNS card or proof of health insurance, recent test results, previous medical reports and a list of the medication you are taking.

        How long is the wait for a specialist appointment?

        +

        Yes. We ask for at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. See the Appointment Booking and Cancellation Policy for full details.

        Do you work with health insurance?
        +

        We have no agreements with insurers or health subsystems, but if you wish, we can add your policy number to the invoice/receipt so that you can claim reimbursement from the relevant provider.

        How does payment work?
        +

        Payment can be made by bank transfer, Multibanco (debit card) or cash. In some situations, prepayment may be requested to confirm the booking.

        What is the waiting room like?
        +

        The waiting room is a modern, comfortable and calm space. We offer background music, coffee and tea. The space was designed to provide a welcoming experience.

        Can I bring someone with me?
        +

        Yes, you can bring someone with you. This is particularly recommended for paediatric appointments or when there is difficulty understanding medical information. The person accompanying you can be present during the appointment.
